Latest Update from Google makes Plex for Google TV even better.

Yep – it’s rolling out as we speak! We started receiving reports a couple days ago from users that the latest patch release for Google TV is being rolled out and happily we can confirm that it does include the enhanced HLS support we’ve been talking about for so long. So go grab the new Plex release to make sure Plex will make use of the new enhanced HLS support – bringing you broader video support, more channels, subtitles and more.

What does it all mean?
World peace!? Well maybe not quite – though we’d like to think that it brings us one step closer!
We’ve covered what this will mean for you in some detail in my previous blog post – but here’s the quick summary:

Wow, I haven’t even got the update on my NSZ-GT1 yet. And you guys already have an update out for Plex to take full advantage of it. Well done gentlemen, well done.
@skirk08 – thanks we do try to be on top of things.
Nice work Plex! Hopefully the Revue isn’t far behind on getting the new update.
Any hint as to when we can expect Plex for Google TV to get an overhauled UI that’s optimized for HDTV?
@jm – we COULD hint but that would be cruel and unusual.
Suffice it to say we know how much people want it and we are working on it!
after the upgrade, i noticed my MKV playback (sony GTV to mac mini OSX) is coming up transcoded (caught my attention when the fan kick in at full blast during heavy CPU use). Is this normal? I dont think this was the case before.
I have both the 3.2 update and Plex 2.0.3.3 installed and now nothing works. All videos popup a “There was a problem with media playback.”
Suggestions?
@Brian – this isn’t terribly surprising. Plex is now going to do a bit of media analysis and transcode if it thinks there’s anything wrong. We acknowledge that this is a bit conservative on the transcode side with the Google TV. If you think you know better (and it sounds like you do) you can try some more advanced options. Go to Settings / Advanced Settings / Direct Play and set this to ‘Offer Choice of Direct Play’ or if you’re really bold ‘Force Direct Play’. The latter option is not as dangerous as you might think since if Direct Play fails outright then Plex will retry with transcode. The reason you might want to choose the ‘Offer’ is because if you get a video that’s partially supported (video but no audio or audio but no video) Plex doesn’t get an error from the media player. You’ll need to manually back out and opt out of the ‘Force Direct Play’ option.
For those that follow and have no idea what we’re talking about – please don’t play with Advanced Settings…
@John – poor fella. Not sure what happened to you but we’d be happy to help you if you open a topic here: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/forum/105-google-tv/
thanks Darrin, i set it to force and all is well in this Plex household! i will play around with the “Offer Choice of Direct Play” to see if i can get the best of both worlds, thanks again!
@Brian – you’re very welcome. I’d guess about 95% of the time things will work great with this setting even if they won’t Direct Play because of the failover logic – but like I said beware cases where you get either no video or no sound.
How do you turn subtitles on in plex for google tv? I have shows that I can play with subtitles on plex for Mac. Can’t seem to figure out how to do it in the GTv app. Lol
@Jason – subtitles work the same way on the Google TV as the other apps. However – you need to have Plex for Google TV 3.2 in order for them to work!
